The Innovations Institute in Ecomaterials, Ecoproducts and Ecoenergies(I2E3) is a research institute, attached to the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) and involved in the advancement of the circular bioeconomy based on the use of renewable biomass and respect for the environment.

With a mission to develop new products and innovative technologies that will enable companies involved in biomass processing to remain at the forefront by adapting quickly to changing market needs, I2E3 aims to increase the efficiency of natural resources use while respecting the environment, as well as to develop knowledge in industrial ecosystems.

Focused on the progress of communities, the promising and mobilizing orientations put forward aspire to promote an ambitious transition of communities where trained professionals will contribute to the success of the circular bioeconomy of tomorrow.

There are three main research teams work at I2E3:

  • Ecomaterials: the objective of the ECOMATERIALS theme is to contribute to the development of knowledge to create new renewable materials from biomass, including but not limited to forestry (e.g. agricultural, marine, etc.).
  • Ecoproducts: The objective of the ECOPRODUCTS theme is to contribute to the development of knowledge to support the conception of new renewable products from biomass (e.g. cellulosic sugars, organic acids, nanocellulose, etc.).
  • Ecoenergies: The objective of the ECOENERGIES theme is to contribute to the development of knowledge in the science of biomass energy production, mainly in the form of renewable fuels (ethanol, gasoline, diesel, aviation fuels and, of course, H2, etc.), and to evaluate and provide reliable bases for the macroeconomic and techno-economic evaluation of this new industrial sector.
