On-going research at VHTNPU, Ukraine

The team from the Volodymyr Hnatiuk Ternopil National Pedagogical University (VHTNPU), Ukraine led by NATO SPS G6094 PPD Dr. Andriy Hertz continues to study the impact of biochar on the plant growing process. The lab results with Zea mays L. were evaluated and analyzed, and the optimal dose of industrial biochar for growing corn was determined. The adsorption properties of two industrial biochars were tested with an emphasis on the ability to absorb ammonium and nitrates from the aqueous solutions.

The biomass from the Miscanthus × giganteus field was collected, ground, packaged and delivered to NULES, Kyiv, Ukraine for biochar production at the pilot scale.

Based on the research results PhD student Viktor Markiv and young researcher Dr Oksana Horyn along with the Senior advisors Dr Oleksandr Kononchuk, Dr Volodymyr Khomenchuk, Dr Andriy Hertz are working on the preparation of the manuscript and conference paper in cooperation with Prof. Valentina Pidlisnyuk, UJEP and Dr Aigerim Mamirova, KazNU.
