May 2-3, 2024: Project Team at the International Conference “Biochar for the Green Recovering of Ukraine”, Ukraine
On May 2-3, 2024, the international conference “Biochar for the Green Recovering of Ukraine” was organized by the National University of the Life and the Environmental Sciences, Kyiv, Ukraine in cooperation with NGO “MEU – EcoStation Network of Ukraine and Second International. The event was provided in hybrid form and established an interdisciplinary dialogue on the application of biochar to increase the resilience of the ecosystems, reduce soil degradation, and promote sustainable development.
Specifically, the following topics were considered:
- Biochar for reclamation of polluted soil at the war-devastated territories in Ukraine
- Use of biochar in agriculture for improvement of the soil condition, increasing its productivity, and animal feeding
- Role of biochar in carbon sequestration and climate strategies
- Using biochar for wastewater treatment
- Arts and crafts as a universal language to raise awareness of the benefits of biochar.
Cooperative partner of the NULES team, Dr. Klus, Institute of Alternative Energy of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, delivered a report on the pilot production of biochar from Miscanthus waste within the project. Dr. Stefanovska, Co-Director, NULES participated in the event in person and had a meeting with Dr. Chetveryk, Head of the Department of Renewable Organic Energy Source, Institute Alternative Energy, and Mr. Rodionov, owner of the Ukrainian firm IDEALE. Prof. Pidlisnyuk, NDP, UJEP; Dr. Hertz, PPD, TVHNPU, and young researcher Medkov, NULES participated in the event remotely.
