Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is one of the leading research universities in Kazakhstan. Founded in 1933, KazNU has a long history of producing highly qualified graduates and performing cutting-edge research in a wide range of disciplines, including natural sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. Currently, it has 16 faculties, 67 departments, 32 Scientific Institutions, and Techno-park. The partnering Department of Biotechnology provides research in biochemistry, microbial biotechnology, biomaterials, food biotechnology, plant biology, and bioinformatics within the framework of the following scientific directions: renewable energy (isolation of indigenous active H2-producing strains from algal biomass and genetic modification to increase H2 photoproduction rates); remediation of soil contaminated by hydrocarbons and pesticides, supported by microbial strains; the role of the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of energy crops in the related stress factors and productivity of the plants. The study of microorganisms and their interactions with M×g rhizosphere holds immense potential for improving energy crop biomass yield and remediation of contaminated lands.
